Yes, burping is a known GLP-1 side effect: belching (the labels call it "eructation") is listed for Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro, in about 1–7% of people on the drug versus 0–1% on placebo. The labels do not record whether burps smell like rotten eggs, but "sulfur burps" are one of the most common complaints people describe, and for most people they ease as the body adjusts to each dose.
How common are burps on Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro?
These are the belching rates from each drug's current US prescribing information, next to placebo in the same trials:
| Drug (trial population) | Belching (eructation) on the drug | Placebo |
|---|---|---|
| Zepbound (weight reduction, Table 1) | 4% at 5 mg · 5% at 10 mg · 5% at 15 mg | 1% |
| Mounjaro (type 2 diabetes) | 3.0% at 5 mg · 2.5% at 10 mg · 3.3% at 15 mg | 0.4% |
| Wegovy 2.4 mg injection (weight reduction, Table 3) | 7% | under 1% |
| Ozempic (type 2 diabetes) | 2.7% at 0.5 mg · 1.1% at 1 mg | 0% |
| Saxenda (weight reduction, Table 2) | 4.5% | 0.2% |
| Rybelsus (type 2 diabetes) | 0.6% at 7 mg · 2% at 14 mg | 0% |
Belching rarely travels alone. The same labels list indigestion (dyspepsia) in 9–10% of people on Zepbound (4% placebo) and 9% on Wegovy (3% placebo), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in 4–5% on Zepbound (2% placebo) and 5% on Wegovy (3% placebo).
Two honest readings of that table: most people on a GLP-1 never report burping as a side effect, and the trials counted belching, not smell. How often burps smell of sulfur has not been measured.
Why do GLP-1s cause sulfur burps?
Every one of these labels states that the drug delays gastric emptying: food leaves the stomach more slowly. That is part of why you feel full sooner. It is also the most likely reason for more burping, because a fuller stomach for longer gives gas and pressure more time to come back up.
The smell is a separate question. The odor of digestive gas comes mainly from trace volatile sulfur compounds, including hydrogen sulfide (the rotten-egg gas). A 2026 review explains that how much of these the gut makes depends on sulfur-containing amino acids and sulfate from food, the gut bacteria, and how fast food moves through the digestive tract.
Put together, the common explanation is that slower digestion gives food more time to break down, and some of that produces sulfur gases. This is thought to be the mechanism, but it has not been studied directly in people taking GLP-1 medications.
Which foods make sulfur burps worse?
The main dietary source of sulfur is the sulfur-containing amino acids in protein, according to a review of sulfur metabolism in the gut. Beyond that, the evidence for specific foods is thin. The foods people most often connect with their own sulfur burps include:
- eggs and red meat
- broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts
- large, rich or fried meals
- carbonated drinks, and beer or wine
Treat that list as a set of suspects to test, not a rule. Do not cut protein to stop burps. Protein matters more on a GLP-1, not less, and spreading it across smaller meals is a better first move than dropping it. Our foods to avoid on a GLP-1 guide covers the fried and greasy meals many people find hardest to tolerate, and the protein calculator gives you a daily target to protect.
When do sulfur burps start, and how long do they last?
- At the start and after dose increases. The Wegovy label says the gastrointestinal reactions it lists, belching included, were most often reported during dose escalation.
- The stomach-emptying effect fades. The Zepbound and Mounjaro labels say the delay in gastric emptying is largest after the first dose and diminishes over time.
- Shot-day pattern. Some people notice burps cluster in the first few days after their weekly shot. The labels do not describe this, so check it against your own log rather than assuming it.
Burps that keep getting worse over weeks, or that come with pain or vomiting, are not part of the "usual" course. See the warning signs below.
How to get rid of sulfur burps on a GLP-1
- Eat smaller meals. A smaller volume in a stomach that empties slowly means less pressure. Stop at the first sign of fullness.
- Eat slowly and chew well. Rushed eating means more swallowed air, and swallowed air is one of the main sources of gas in the digestive tract.
- Go easy on fatty and fried meals, especially in the evening. Many people find heavy meals are the ones that come back up as sulfur burps.
- Cut back on carbonation, straws and chewing gum, which all add swallowed air or gas.
- Stay upright for a while after eating instead of lying down, especially if you also get reflux or heartburn.
- Test your own trigger foods one at a time, from the list above, while keeping your protein target.
- Sip fluids through the day. Dehydration is a labeled risk when GI side effects pile up.
- Ask your prescriber or pharmacist before trying an OTC remedy for gas, indigestion or reflux. GLP-1 labels note that slower stomach emptying can change how oral medications are absorbed.
- If it flares at every dose increase, raise it at your next appointment. Dose and schedule decisions belong to your prescriber, never a self-adjustment.
Sulfur burps sometimes arrive with diarrhea. If that is your pattern, our Zepbound diarrhea guide covers hydration and the fluids worth reaching for, and the nausea page covers the queasiness that often comes with an over-full stomach.
When to call your doctor
Burping on its own is rarely dangerous. Call your prescriber promptly, or seek urgent care, for any of these:
- Severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without nausea or vomiting, sometimes felt from the abdomen through to the back. This is the labeled warning sign of pancreatitis.
- Pain in the upper stomach, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools. These are the labeled warning signs of gallbladder problems, including gallstones.
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea that does not go away. Fluid loss can lead to dehydration and kidney problems.
- Stomach problems that are severe or will not go away. The labels warn that GI reactions are sometimes severe.
- A planned surgery or procedure with anesthesia or deep sedation. Tell every provider you take a GLP-1, because slower stomach emptying raises the risk of food getting into the lungs.
What to track
"I've been burping a lot" is hard to act on. "Sulfur burps on days 1–3 after each of my last four shots, mostly after dinners with eggs or fried food" gives your prescriber something to work with.
In the GLP AI symptom tracker, log belching from the side-effect catalog with a severity from 1 to 10. Indigestion, acid reflux and heartburn are catalog items too, so you can log them separately when they show up together. Log meals by photo, barcode, text or voice, and each one gets a GLP-1 Meal Score, which helps a food pattern show up instead of staying a guess. The estimated medication level chart puts your symptoms against the point in your dose week. Before an appointment, export the doctor report PDF and share it yourself; doctor visit prep covers what to bring. You can find more symptoms on the GLP-1 side effects hub.
Sulfur Burps on GLP-1s FAQ
Does Wegovy cause sulfur burps?
Wegovy can cause burping: the label lists eructation in 7% of adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg versus under 1% on placebo. The label does not say whether the burps smell of sulfur. The likely link is that Wegovy delays stomach emptying, which is thought to give food more time to produce sulfur gases.
Is burping a side effect of Mounjaro and Zepbound?
Yes. Both tirzepatide labels list it. Mounjaro reports eructation in 2.5–3.3% of people with type 2 diabetes versus 0.4% on placebo. Zepbound reports 4–5% in its weight-reduction trials versus 1% on placebo. "Sulphur burps" on Mounjaro (the UK spelling) are the same thing: the labels count the burping, not the smell.
Do sulfur burps mean Wegovy is working?
No. Burping is a side effect, not a sign of effectiveness. Most people on Wegovy never report it, and the medication works for them too. Judge progress by appetite, weight trend and how you feel, not by burps.
How long do sulfur burps last on a GLP-1?
No trial has measured how long sulfur burps last. The labels say GI reactions are most common during dose escalation, and the tirzepatide labels say the stomach-emptying delay is largest after the first dose and fades over time. Burps that persist or get worse for weeks are worth raising with your prescriber.
Why do I have sulfur burps and diarrhea at the same time?
Both are listed GI side effects of GLP-1 medications, and they often appear in the same weeks, especially after a dose increase. Keep up your fluids. Call your prescriber if the diarrhea or vomiting does not go away, if you cannot keep fluids down, or if you have severe stomach pain or a fever.
